For shipments of food, for humans or animals, to the USA, in order to
comply with this country's new customs regulations,
which took effect on 12 August 2004, be advised that:
Importing meat products to the USA is prohibited, except when from
a company authorised by the US Department of Agriculture. There are several authorised Spanish companies.
In the event that the product is from one of them, it must be accompanied by:
Certificate of origin of the authorised company.
The corresponding health certificates.
Shipments of food between individuals are subject to compliance with the law on
bioterrorism that requires prior notification of the shipment to the United States
Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Therefore, any shipment that is not accompanied
by confirmation of said prior notification may be rejected by
customs. The notification may be submitted at
http://www.fda.gov/Food/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/PriorNoticeofImportedFoods/default.htm
Shipment senders must comply with this regulation, which is completely beyond the
control of Correos. Failure to provide the confirmation number, as well as
indicating the inclusion of food in the shipments between individuals, may give rise to
it being impossible to deliver the shipment and its subsequent return to the country of origin. The
subsequent return charges shall be paid by the sender,
and must be satisfied prior to recovering the parcel.
