The United Nations has launched a campaign with the theme "Dignity and Justice for All" to coincide with the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The purpose of the campaign is to reinforce the idea that this document is not just a list of abstract concepts which add up to a utopian vision of human existence, but rather a real commitment to universal dignity and justice.
Celebrations of this Anniversary, which took place throughout 2008, culminated on 10th December –International Human Rights Day.
The Declaration of Human Rights was the first international statement on the principles of fundamental human rights and freedoms and its relevance has endured to this day. We must remember that these basic values, of inherent human dignity, non-discrimination, equality, fairness and universality, apply to everyone, everywhere and always. The Declaration is universal and timeless, a living document which concerns us all.
