Other initiatives (Green Public Procurement Plan, environmental sustainability as a corporate value, Sponsorship of the ExpoZaragoza 2008, handing out energy saving light bulbs)

  1. CORREOS has voluntarily joined the Spanish General Administration, its Public Organisations and Social Security managing bodies' Green Public Procurement Plan, approved by the Government in January 2008. The purpose of this Plan is to introduce practices for protecting the environment in public procurement, so that in the target set by the European Union in the revised strategy for Sustainable Development is reached in 2010. It establishes the objectives and deadlines for including the environmental criteria to purchase and contract groups of products, services and works in the public tenders, as well as others considered a priority.

    The public postal operator, although not included in the application scope of this plan, has committed itself to progressively adapting the procurement procedures to this Plan, so that the purchases of assets and services it makes comply with the requirements established. Thus, in the specifications of the tenders, specific actions that represent added protection of the environment included by the bidders in their proposals will be positively assessed, such as initiatives or operating procedures in the contracts that represent social improvements designed to favour protecting childhood, the insertion of disabled people or immigrants, or that contribute to eradicating inequality between men and women, gender-based violence and to combating unemployment.

  2. CORREOS, in the Board of Directors held on 30 May 2008, adopted the agreement to officially include environmental sustainability as a strategic axis and as a corporate value, establishing it as one of the main principles of priority application to boost the group of Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and actions it carries out.
  3. CORREOS was the sole postal sponsor and official supplier of postal services in ExpoZaragoza 2008, which was centred on ‘Water and Sustainable Development’. With its presence at this event, our company expressed its firm commitment to society and to the respect for and conservation of the environment.

    During the three months of the fair, more than a million people (an average of 12,000 a day) visited CORREOS' Pavilion, which under the slogan of ‘A perfect mechanism, a world of services’, shone with its original design, its interactivity and the possibility for visitors of all ages to take part. The protagonists at this event, among others, were the environmental initiatives promoted by the company to contribute to sustainable development: a) sale of ecological envelopes, boxes and packaging from the ‘Línea Verde’ (Green Line) and the subsequent planting of trees, b) the ‘Donate your mobile’ campaign, c) the electrical vehicles, vans and bicycles, that CORREOS has started to use, d) the thematic stamps that promote the values of Nature and respect for the environment

  4. In the framework of the ‘With your savings we all win campaign. Every small gesture counts’, promoted by the Ministry of Industry in its Energy Savings and Efficiency Plan, with its post office network, gives citizens that present a gift voucher, that they have received in their electricity bill, 22 million energy saving light bulbs. This national campaign, started in the middle of February 2009.

    CORREOS is also distributing 60,000 information posters to the entire post office network and head offices that are taking part in the start up of this project managed by the Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (IDAE - Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving), whose objective is to make society aware of the importance of energy saving and adopting responsible consumption habits that promote energy efficiency.
