POSTLowCIT is a CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) project promoted and funded by the European Union aimed at developing a more efficient and sustainable Correos goods delivery service using vehicles powered by alternative fuels, which will help reduce emissions (mainly CO2 and nitrous oxides (NOx)) and reduce traffic noise (both urban and intercity) while maintaining quality standards.
The project consists of three parts, based on a feasibility study: development of a distribution control system capable of guaranteeing fluid last-mile connections; roll-out of electric vehicles; and traction technologies with fewer emissions (autogas) for long distances.
In order to successfully achieve the main goal for POSTLowCIT, a number of specific milestones were identified:
A. Incorporate electric vehicles in the last mile to help build a goods delivery system with low CO2 and NOx emissions and low noise emissions to thus improve air quality.
B. Increase the roll-out of autogas and encourage its promotion as an alternative fuel for long-distance transport.
C. Develop a more efficient distribution network model capable of harnessing cutting-edge technology, which will enable critical bottlenecks to be eliminated from the goods transportation network.
In order to reach the goals set, a number of pilot schemes will be implemented within the framework of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). Specifically, these pilot projects will take place in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Seville, as well as on the road connections between them.
First of all, vehicles powered by alternative energies will start to be used in real Correos operations in order to reduce the use of fossil fuels and hence CO2 and NOx emissions, as well as reduce noise levels in urban areas.
To do so, data will be gathered in real time from electric vehicles (including from their smart recharge stations) and from the trucks powered by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) that will begin to be used on long-distance routes.
The project also includes the development of an advanced optimisation system to harmonise the data gathered from monitoring the fleet via a network optimisation system. All this will allow network efficiency to be increased in both the last mile and on long-distance routes.
