Since the first National Philatelic Exhibition (EXFILNA) was held in Madrid in 1963, different locations have hosted this annual fair. This year’s edition of EXFILNA is showcased in Leon and featuring in the Souvenir Sheet are a combination of modern architecture represented by the facade of the Ciudad de León Auditorium, medieval art works such as the Basilica of San Isidoro de León and the image of Ferdinand I  King of León between 1037 and 1065 from the Liber Testamentorum,  kept in the cathedral of León.

EXFILNA 2013 has been organized by the Spanish Federation of Philatelic Societies (FESOFI) and is sponsored by Correos, amongst others. It is the most important national philatelic exhibition held in Spain.

The city of León has a long history dating back to Roman times. It has been declared a World Heritage Site and is a necessary step in the Way of St. Jacques. One of its most notable buildings is the Basilica of San Isidoro de León built in the 11th and 12th centuries. It was originally a monastery dedicated to San Pelayo and after the transfer of the remains of St. Isidoro, bishop of Seville, the Basilica was named after him.

The architectural ensemble of San Isidoro de León is of Romanesque style. At the feet  of the church is the Royal Pantheon, where lie the Kings of León. The floor plan is formed by three naves and the basilica has capitals and extraordinary Romanesque wall paintings for which it is know as the "Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art". The paintings depict scenes from the Gospel and the Apocalypse, figures of saints and the agricultural calendar with the twelve months of the year. The author is unknown.

The auditorium Ciudad de León is the work of architects Emilio Tuñón and Luis Moreno Mansilla. It was opened in 2002 as a cultural venue for hosting all kinds of services and activities, such as music, dance, theatre and exhibitions. The building is divided into two distinct areas in shape and function: the main one hosts the concert hall and the second one the exhibition space.
