Dolmenes

WORLD HERITAGE. ANTEQUERA DOLMENS SITE.

On 16 July 2016, UNESCO catalogued the Antequera Dolmens Site, which became the most important megalithic complex of continental Europe.

After years of studies, the astroarchaeologist Michael Hoskin, of Cambridge University, confirmed that unlike other megalithic constructions around the Mediterranean, the stones of Antequera did not point at the sunrise, but rather, towards Peña de los Enamorados, a peak with an unusual shape resembling a reclining man, which owes its name to a legend that two lovers (a Christian man and a Muslim woman) threw themselves from the top of the mountain because their love was forbidden; also, the megalithic complex of Antequera is oriented to Torcal, a natural landscape famous for the strange shapes erosion has given its limestone rocks.

The Antequera Dolmens Site consists of the Dolmens of Menga, Viera, and El Romeral. Approaching any of the Dolmens is like travelling thousands of years back in time. The narrow stone passageways, the dim light, the entrance into the bowels of the earth, make a visit to these places an incomparable experience.

The Menga Dolmen is a tomb made of large stones, where we can distinguish an atrium, a corridor, and a grand burial chamber. Inside there is a very deep and narrow well, a strange resource to find in this type of construction.

The Viera Dolmen is a tomb in the form of a passageway, 21 metres long, ending in a square chamber with traces of red paint still visible on its stones.

El Romeral consists of a smaller passageway than the others. At the end are two circular chambers, which may have been used for offerings.

The stamp shows a drawing of these three landmarks of Antequera: the Dolmens, El Torcal, and La Peña de los Enamorados.
