For the fourth consecutive year, Correos has held its National Stamp Design Contest, which promotes the value of stamps as a medium of artistic expression, for telling stories and passing on culture, in addition to their obvious role in postage.
The contest, which has already become a benchmark in philatelic design, proved to be a success once again, with higher participation than last year. 1,600 designs were submitted in 2017, with 745 in the general category and 855 in the children's category.
Of all these, 40 were short-listed, 20 by popular vote on the contest’s website and the other 20 by the professional judgement of a panel of leading figures from the philatelic and design world.
The winners of the 4th National Stamp Design Contest (2017) were, in the general category, Simona Peres, and in the children’s category, Alba Guzmán Alcalde.
The winning stamp in the general category illustrates a dream-like female character, in shades of purple, using feathers to write words full of love.
The design in the children’s category depicts a mandrill painted in bright colours.
The two winners will have the satisfaction of seeing their respective designs in circulation, as Correos will produce and issue stamps bearing the winning designs in 2018.
Also, the works of the award winners and finalists will be part of a travelling exhibition that will tour Spanish post offices throughout 2018.
The Correos contest, now in its fourth year, is yet another example of Spanish philately’s capacity to innovate to raise the profile of its work and, above all, pass on stamp values.
