CARTOONS. ANTONIO FRAGUAS "FORGES".
This is not the first time that Forges has featured on a Correos stamp. It’s not even the first time he has featured on a Correos stamp in the Cartoons series.
But this time, the motif on the stamp is not one of his fantastic drawings but the man himself, the great artist and humourist, and although he left us in 2018, his cartoons live on in the memories of millions.
From Madrid, born of a Catalan mother and a Galician father, he first started work for Spanish Television (TVE) until deciding to become a full-time cartoonist in 1973.
He had published his first drawing in the newspaper Pueblo almost a decade before, in 1964.
Diez Minutos, Hermano Lobo, Por Favor, El Jueves, Diario 16 and El Mundo are among the magazines and newspapers that regularly published his work.
In 1995 he started to write a daily editorial cartoon for El País, and several generations would wake up every day curious to see what Forges’ next hilarious gag would be.
Collaborating on various radio programmes, he also directed two films during the 70s, País S.A. and El bengador Gusticiero y su pastelera madre. He also created four television series, El Mulińandupelicascarabajo, Nosotros, and on TVE, and on Telemadrid.
He wrote several books, and the last to be published was Lo más de la Historia de Aquí (en tres volúmenes), a humorous compendium of Spanish history.
The Correos mini sheet dedicated to Antonio Fraguas has a cut-out shaped like a speech bubble, as seen in Forges’ drawings.
The stamp features a close up of the artist, seemingly drawn by himself, as one of the protagonists of his cartoons with his pen held high. The design is completed by his unforgettable signature.
The mini sheet will be presented at the 51st edition of the Feria de la Plaza Mayor, which will take place from 12 to 16 June 2019.
