Two stamps have been issued in the "Castles" series, one depicting the castle at Granadilla (Cáceres) and the other showing the fortification known as the Mota , in Alcalá la Real (Jaén).

the layout of Granadilla castle, an Italianate granite structure dating from the 15 th century, consists of a prismatic central section with four attached semi-cylindrical elements, the interior of the building being arranged over three floors. It was built on the instructions of the Duke of Alba, who placed the project in the charge of master builder Juan Carrer. He in turn was assisted by Vasco de Troya, a dungeon builder, and T. Bretón, who specialised in ditches and moats. Built on the northeast side of the city walls, on the site of an old Arab fort, it is a hybrid in style between castle-palace and tower. With its highly intricate stonemasonry and its compact, solid appearance, it became a prison in 1830. During the 1960s, Granadilla was cut off as a result of the construction of the Gabriel y Galán reservoir, and ownership was transferred to the Tajo Hydrographic Confederation. the town of Granadilla subsequently succeeded in having it classified as an Artistic and Historical Monument and it was restored in 1980. the stamp, with a face value of 27 cents, shows its main façade.

Mota fortress, which can be found in the town of Alcalá la Real, Jaen, is believed to have been built in the 8 th century during the time of Arab rule. this citadel, located on top of a perfect natural vantage point that formed one of Al-Andalus's most impregnable and complex defensive structures, comprises a keep and three towers arranged around a parade ground. Particularly notable for its great height is the Homage Tower, which contains a dungeon and a large hall, now used as an archaeological museum. Much of the construction for this fortress, which was conquered for the first time by Alfonso VIII in 1213 and subsequently retaken by the Arabs, was completed during the 12th century. In 1931, the Mota was declared a National Historical Monument. this stamp, with a face value of 77 cents, shows a view of the whole site.
