On occasion of the World Rowing Championship which will take place in the town of Banyoles from the 27 July to the 1 August 2004, a stamp devoted to this important sports event is issued.

The lake of Banyoles, venue for the competition, is located in the Pla de l’Estany region in a nature protected area of a great ecological value ideal for rowing. It has a surface area of 107,5 Ha, a length three times bigger than its largest width and a maximum depth of 60 metres. In the Barcelona ’92 Olympic games it was the venue of the rowing competitions and training place for many of our great rowers. Rowing competitions have their origin in Great Britain, where in the XIX century became of great importance at universities. The famous Oxford vs Cambridge regatta took place for the first time in 1829 and the one between Yale and Harvard in 1852. In 1893 The International Federation of Rowing Societies (FISA) celebrated the first European Championships organised by this institution. In the first Olympic Games of the modern era which took place in 1896, rowing was part of the competitions. The Olympic rowing boats are called outriggers and their main characteristic is that the device that holds the oar, the rowlock, is outside the boat. There are two different rowing modalities, in Scull boats or Sweep boats. In the Scull boats each rower uses two short oars, about three metres long each and less than 2kg each. In the Sweep boats the rower uses only one long oar, between 3,75 and 3,85 metres long and about 3kg of weight.
