As part of the series of issues planned during the World Philately Exhibition, España 2004, to be held in Valencia from 22 to 30 May, a block is being issued that includes three stamps and three insignia dedicated to Monarchy.
The stamps carry portraits of Their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias and the Prince and Ms Letizia. The insignia show the coat of arms of His Majesty the King, the coat of arms of the Prince of Asturias and a painting by Andrés Compagnucci of Almudena Cathedral (Madrid), where the Prince will be married on 22 May. Philip of Borbón and Greece was born in Madrid on 30 January 1968, at the Nuestra Señora de Loreto hospital. His godparents were his grandfather, Don Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona, and his great-grandmother, Queen Victoria Eugenia. As heir to the throne, he was given the title Prince of Asturias on 1 November 1977, along with the titles Prince of Girona and Prince of Viana, and he also holds the titles of Duke of Montblanc, Count of Cervera and Lord of Balaguer. When he was 18, he swore allegiance to the Constitution and the King before Parliament. In a long and distinguished academic career, the Prince gained a degree in Law, going on subsequently to study Business Sciences, and after two years at the University of Georgetown (Washington), he gained a Master's Degree in International relations. He has also completed military courses with all three armed services. Ms Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano was born on 15 September 1972 in Oviedo into a family that had very close connections with the media. She gained a degree in Information Sciences from the Complutense University in Madrid, specialising in journalism, and she has a Master's Degree in Audiovisual Journalism. She began working in the media at a very young age, and her early credits include La Nueva España, ABC and Agencia EFE. She has worked as presenter, editor and reporter for CNN plus. In 2000 she joined TVE, where she worked on the news team and presented Informe Semanal (a weekly programme focusing on particular news events) and special programmes on the euro. She has frequently been sent as a special reporter to many different places around the world in order to cover events of special interest. This is the first time that the Spanish postal service has issued a stamp to commemorate a royal wedding.
