These races take place every year in August between the beaches of Bajo de Guía and La Piletas, near the mouth of the Guadalquivir river and the natural park of Donaña. In order to fix the date the races are going to take place, the tide charts are consulted and two three day cycles are fixed, always coinciding with the low tide, so that there are fourteen days between the first and second cycle. During the six days the competitions last, 26 races take place following official regulations. The colour and entertainment of the fiesta, together with the beautiful surroundings, attract hundreds of visitors who gather around a beach race track, where people can bet in special stalls set up along the track. The origin of these races go back to the XIX century when the fish was unloaded from the fishing boats in the beach and taken to the fish markets of the nearby towns by the toughest horses known as the “caballos corredores” (running horses). Whilst they awaited the arrival of the fishing boats, these horses competed in speed on the damp and fine sand of the beach. The first races took place on the 31st August of 1845 and on the 20th September of the same year was founded the Sociedad de carreras de Caballos de Sanlúcar de Barrameda, (Society of horse races of Sanlúcar de Barrameda) the oldest in Spain. In 1989 they were declared of National Tourist Interest by the Secretaría General de Turismo and in 1997 they were awarded with the recognition of Fiesta of International Tourist Interest by the Dirección General de Turismo.
