A stamp is issued within the Sports series devoted to the commemoration the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Real Betis Balompié football club.

The history of the Betis begins in 1907 when a group of students of the Polytechnic school founds in Seville the Sevilla Balompié football team. Two years later this teams formally registers itself in the civil government register thus beginning its long sports career. In 1914, the Sevilla Balompié merges with the Real Betis F.C. (created in 1909) and begins to be known as: Real Betis Balompié. In its track record there are major and minor triumphs, however the support of its fans has always been constant. Looking back at the club’s history, we can see that one of the most glorious moments take place in the late twenties and in the thirties. In 1928 it won the Copa de Andalucia championship and in 1931 gets to the final of the Copa de España becoming runner up. A year later, in 1932, it is the first team from Andalucía to get into the first division and in the 1934/35 season it becomes the winner of the Champion League. This first stage is followed by another not so successful in which the team goes down to the second and third division. The confidence of its fans filling up the stadium, is the main support for the team who in 1958 moves up again to the first division. During the two following decades, the Real Betis Balompié faces difficult moments but is able in 1977 to win the Copa del Rey. In 2005 it will win this trophy once again and become runner up in the Spanish Supercopa. In the international field it has taken part on six occasions in the Copa de la UEFA and on two occasions in the Recopa de Europa and once in the Champion’s League. The team wears a green and white uniform and has 35,000 members from more than 318 clubs. The stamp depicts the name of the team over the logo of the Centenary representing number 100 and the coat of arms (made up of two circles with two Bs entwined with a crown on top and a triangle with thirteen green and white stripes) and the date 1907-2007.
