Juvenia, a National Youth Philatelic Exhibition is an important philatelic event specially aimed at young people which takes place every two years. This year it will be held in Calahorra (La Rioja).

60420071

Juvenia, in its XX edition, will take place from the 28 April to the 5 May, and as in previous editions, it aims at making known the exciting, varied and formative world of stamps amongst young people who are the bases of the future of stamp collecting. This edition is organised by the Philatelic and Numismatic Association of Calahorra and the Philatelic Youth Club “El Lazarillo” and will exhibit more than hundred collections from Spain, France, Portugal and Italy. These collections will be evaluated by eight juries. Within Juvenia 2007, a number of cultural events will take place: Youth philatelic workshops, courses, visits and recreational activities. Before this edition comes to an end, the next Juvenia 2009, taking place in Mieres (Asturias) will be announced. Calahorra, capital city of the Baja Rioja region and second in importance in La Rioja, after Logroño, is located in the Ebro valley by the Cidacos river. Its economy is based on agriculture and in the tinned food industry. Its history goes back to the lower Palaeolithic and there are vestiges of a settlement in the Iron Age. It was conquered by Rome in the year 187 B:C: and converted into a municipality by Julius Cesar and Augustus. It is an Episcopal see from the IV century and in 714 was conquered by the Muslims. In 1045 it was reconquered by king Alfonso VI who incorporated it into the crown of Castille. In the XV century it underwent a big urban development and in the XIX century with the arrival of the train and the development of its tinned food industry, it reached its maximum expansion. Nowadays, one can see the remains of the circus and the Roman wall, the gothic cathedral of Santa Maria, the Episcopal palace, the baroque churches of El Carmen, San Francisco and the church of Saint Andrew with its gothic façade; the neoclassic church of Santiago and the convent of the Carmelitas Descalzas from late XVI century. All of these are depicted in the stamp.
