The stamp of this Sports series is devoted to the 100th Anniversary of the Real Sociedad de Fútbol, founded in San Sebastian in 1909.
Football, an unknown sport at the time in Spain, was introduced in San Sebastián in the beginning of the XX century. The first football club in this city was the San Sebastian Recreation Club, founded in 1903, which six years later became the Sociedad de Foot-ball de San Sebastián, the original name of the current Real Sociedad. During the first years, the team had good results but couldn’t participate in the Campeonatos de España of 1909 because it wasn’t officially registered, so it decided to play under the denomination Cycling Club of San Sebastián which did meet the necessary requirements. Under this denomination, the team won the first Campeonato de Copa and its first title. In 1910, King Alfonso XIII awarded the club the title of Real (Royal). The early years of this blue and white team were of a great rivalry with the Athletic de Bilbao and the Racing de Irún, and its 100 years of history are marked by good and bad moments. In 1928 it played in the Spanish First Division league coming fourth; in 1931 it won the Sub championship League and the Sub championship Copa in 1951. In 1967 begin the most notable years of the club, with a strong team made up of acknowledged veterans and young players who years later won the League. In 1974, and for the first time, it plays the UEFA Cup. Chronologically, the 1979-1980 season was the most brilliant of the history of the Real Sociedad winning 32 consecutive matches. In 1980-81 and 1981-82 it became League Champion. In 1987 won the Copa del Rey. The first football pitch of the Real Sociedad was Atotxa and was inaugurated in 1913. 80 years later it was replaced by Anoeta, with a capacity for 32.000 spectators.
