On the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Levante U.D. football club, a commemorative stamp is issued within the Sports series.
In September 1909 the Regional Federation of Football Clubs was founded in Valencia at the same time as the Fútbol Club Levante and the Real Gimnástico Club de Fútbol. Both teams participated in the tournaments at the time achieving important local triumphs. The F.C.Levante won the Torneo Super Regional Valencia-Murcia in the 1934/35 season and classified for semi-finals in the Copa de España. After the Civil War both teams merged and in the season of 1941/42 the resulting team changed its name to Levante Unión Deportiva, with its equipment in red and blue.
The sporting history of the Levante U.D. is full of good and bad moments, such as the promotion to the First Division in the season of 1962/63, the fall to the lower divisions and further upgrading in later years. Although most of the time the Levante U.D. has played in the Second Division, the effort and competitive spirit have always accompanied the team throughout the hundred years of history it has struggled to obtain the greatest achievements.
Vallejo was the first historic stadium of the Levante U.D. until September 1969 when the current Estadi Ciutat de Valencia was inaugurated. The players and pupils of the football school exercise and train in the Ciudad Deportiva de Buñol.
The stamp depicts the team colours, the coat of arms and the logo specially designed for the centenary commemoration: 1909-2009.
