To celebrate the centenary of the Eskola Armory in Eibar (Gipuzkoa), a commemorative stamp is issued depicting a motif allusive to this institution.
In 1912, by initiative of the City Council of Eibar, the Armory Eskola or Armory School was created to support the industrial development of the town and the region of Guipuzcoa. The aim of the school was to combine theory and practice, becoming the first Spanish professional centre where lectures were accompanied by practical lessons on the subject. The project was developed following the existing Ecole d'Armerie of Liege (Belgium) and adapted to the Spanish model.
Throughout these hundred years of history the school has evolved and adapted to the new curricula and training in line with official institutions. From its beginnings until the 1960s, the Eibar Armory School was a benchmark for other precision engineering centres and armories all over Spain. From that date on new core subjects were introduced such as electricity, electronics, drafting and micromechanics. Later on, other subjects were added such as medical laboratory assistant and quality control. In 1980 the Tekniker research society was created in collaboration with the Old Alumni Association and the local entrepreneurs. It is now one of the most important research centres in the Basque Country.
Today the Armory Eskola offers two training areas: Intermediate and Advanced Level courses with different specialties in each of them.
In January 2011 the town of Eibar was awarded the title of "City of Science and Innovation" by the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, in recognition of their collaboration to the development of science and technology.
