The corps of Abogados del Estado (State Lawyers)) was born in 1881 by virtue of the Royal Decree which created the Directorate General for Administrative Litigation. To commemorate this centenary a stamp depicting its official logo is issued.
The corps of Abogados del Estado is the executive organ of the legal services to the State and other public institutions. It is committed to the counselling, representation and defence of the State, its autonomous bodies, other entities and agencies, state corporations and foundations with state participation before the courts of Justice. It is also entrusted with the legal counselling of the European Union legislation, the representation and defence of the Kingdom of Spain before the courts of the EU, the Human Rights Court and before any other international body with relevant authority in the protection of human rights. This corps promotes research work and the organization of activities on the study, dissemination and training of its members. Another of the matters entrusted is the economic, financial and budgetary management of the State Legal Service.
The members of this corps are specifically commissioned by the Minister of Justice, on the proposal of the Foreign Affairs Minister, for the representation and defence of the kingdom of Spain before the EU courts,
The Abogados del Estado are part of the Abogacía General del Estado- Dirección del Servicio Jurídico del Estado, the head of which is the Abogado General del Estado, all attached to the Ministry of Justice. They form the largest chambers in the country.
Access to the corps is by public examination of law graduates. They can wear the uniform of the Corps and before the courts they must wear robes and bear the institutional plaque and medal.
