One small step for man, one giant product for stamp collecting
20 July 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of man’s arrival on the Moon. Astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins landed the Apollo XI spacecraft on the Earth’s satellite. A historical milestone of the 20th century and one of the greatest feats in the history of humanity.
For decades, postal stamps have depicted figures and events that would go down in history. And the feats of astronauts and advances in Space exploration have been a recurring theme in postal issues in many countries, above all in the USA and the USSR.
In stamp collecting’s strictest field, Correos has dedicated 14 stamps to Space exploration. To this effect, the theme ranges from the inauguration of observatories, anniversaries in the field of astronomy, ephemerides and figures, ITU-Hispasat satellite, and of course, an issue dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing.
Correos is about to release a stamp case as a homage to this North American Space event with a collection of stamps, envelopes, and US and Spanish coins. The product consists of 4 North American postal stamps (2+2), along with 1 coin and 2 prepaid envelopes;
With regard to Spain, its participation in the milestone is acknowledged with 1 stamp and 1 coin released by Correos and the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Tímbre (National Mint of Spain) respectively. The Spanish stamp has a value of €3.50 and the silver coin is worth €10.
On one side of the coin is an image of His Majesty the King Felipe VI. At the top are the words FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA. At the bottom is the year of issue, 2019.
On the other side in an image of the Moon, and above it the Module that landed on the surface of the satellite attached to the Command Module. To the left is the Ceca logo, and below, an image of the antenna that supported this historic flight from Spain. To the right is the value of the piece, 10 EURO. On the edge of the coin are the words 50 ANIVERSARIO LLEGADA A LA LUNA, meaning ‘50th anniversary of the first Moon landing’, and in the top left the date, 1969-2019.
The North American coin is also made of silver and is worth half a dollar.
The stamp case will have a limited stock of 150 units, numbered, and at a price of €100.
