Correos makes more than 2.5 billion deliveries a year. Our aim while doing this is to leave the smallest footprint possible.
We have been analysing and incorporating vehicles that run on alternative fuels since 1996, when we tested the first electric vehicle at Correos (Zeus). We now have one of the biggest fleets in Spain and have acquired more than 500 electric vehicles in the past few years, not to mention the more than 10,000 mail carriers that make their deliveries on foot, eliminating the need for fossil fuels.
The majority of our current fleet consists of electric vehicles (100% electric plus pedal-assist bicycles), but we are also testing compressed natural gas (ECOGATE) and liquefied petroleum (POSTLowCIT).
At Correos, we are aware that towns and cities face big environmental challenges including congestion, which affects quality of life, NOx and particle emissions, which affect health, and CO2 emissions, which contribute to global warming.
To reduce the impact in the last mile of our deliveries, we are working to reduce the footprint of the journeys we make and to reduce the number of miles we travel.
