What is the E-mail Checker?

The E-mail Checker is a new digital tool that we have designed to combat fraud and identity theft. By using this checker, you can check that the e-mails you receive from Correos really come from us. We now include a code consisting of letters and numbers in every message that we send in order to enable recipients to check the authenticity of those messages. This quick and easy solution guarantees your security. We look after you. 

How does the E-mail Checker work?

The best thing about the E-mail Checker is that it is easy to use. Just follow the steps below to look after your own cyber-security:

  1. Access the E-mail Checker in one of the three ways we offer from the Correos website: the main banner; the Tools menu; or from the Information Security space within the Customer Services area. 
  2. Enter your e-mail address and the code appearing at the bottom of the e-mail you received.
  3. Click CHECK.
  4. The E-mail Checker will respond with an OK if your e-mail is safe.
  5. If the response is not OK, carefully read the information provided by the system and check the data you entered in the form fields. It might not always be a phishing attempt. You might have made a mistake in the e-mail address or code you entered.
  6. If all the information is correct and the response is still not OK, it might be a fake e-mail and a phishing attempt.

Where can I find the code?

The code is a combination of letters and numbers appearing at the bottom of the e-mail you received from Correos.

Very important! Don’t forget to enter the full code into the checker to perform the check.  

What responses might I get from the e-mail checker?

Responses when there is no fraud risk

  • OK. This e-mail has been sent by Correos and is safe.

Responses when there is a fraud risk 

  • Very important! This e-mail was not sent by Correos. It may be a fake e-mail and a phishing attempt. See further information.
  • Attention! This e-mail address has already been checked. If it was not you who performed this check, it may be a fake e-mail and a phishing attempt. See further information.

How does Correos support the fight against fraud?

The fight against fraud is one of the main missions for Correos at the moment. We guarantee the cyber-secure digitalisation of our ecosystem and have therefore made changes to our communications:

  • We are committed to secure channels, such as the app or e-mail. 
  • We incorporate a unique code consisting of letters and numbers in our e-mails so that you can check the authenticity of the e-mails you receive from Correos. 

When is this initiative being launched?

The commitment to secure communication channels and inclusion of the code consisting of letters and numbers in the e-mails sent by Correos will begin on 1 April 2022. As from that date, the new E-mail Checker tool will become available for you to check the authenticity of any message received from us. 

What happens if I receive an e-mail from Correos without a code?

Be careful! If, from 1 April 2022, you receive an e-mail from Correos without a code, it might be a fraudulent phishing attempt because all messages from Correos via e-mail should include the code consisting of letters and numbers. 

Is this code personal?

Yes, a unique and personal code is generated for each e-mail. Under no circumstances can two e-mails have the same verification code. 

How many times can I verify the code?

Important! After entering a code correctly, you will only be able to check its authenticity that one time. It is not possible to check a code more than once. 

How can I check the authenticity of the e-mail received?

You can check the authenticity of the e-mails received from Correos by using the E-mail Checker. You can find this tool on the website at Correos.es.

What information do I need to enter into the checker?

It’s very simple! You just need to enter two things into the E-mail Checker: your e-mail address and the code consisting of letters and numbers appearing at the bottom of the e-mail.

What happens if the response is OK?

If the E-mail Checker responds with an OK, the e-mail was indeed sent by Correos and you can trust the content. This OK guarantees the authenticity of the e-mail you have received!

What happens if the response is not OK?

If the E-mail Checker responds with anything except an OK... Be careful! You are probably looking at a fake e-mail and a phishing attempt. See further information.
